Kids Ride classes meet on the 3rd Level inside the City of Redmond's Parking Garage, 8711 160th Ave, Redmond, WA .
The garage is almost empty on Saturdays, so we have plenty of room to learn without any cars to worry about. The garage also keeps us out of the rain and sun, making us more comfortable. Parents or caregivers need to be present during your child's lesson. You can watch and learn, or do your own thing. You just need to be on site. |
If you don't know how to teach your child to ride a bike, you're not alone.
It's a process that involves many skills that have to be put together simultaneously, all on a machine that cannot stand up by itself. Unless you understand each skill and how to teach it, teaching your child to ride a bike can end in tears of frustration (you, your child, or both). However, learning to ride a bike doesn't have to be a frustrating experience for you or your child. My Kids Ride bike classes are specially designed to teach your child how to ride a bike and ride safely. I teach bike skills in a fun way, where learning each skill is a game. Kids Ride is a mastery-based learning model to teach kids the fundamentals of riding a 2-wheel bike without training wheels, and without an adult holding onto the bike. Kids advance at their own pace from Kids Ride 1: B is for Balance to Kids Ride 2: S is for Start, Stop, Steer, and Straight as they master the skills of each class. Some kids may advance quickly, while others may need more time. Both paces are OK and expected. This is the same model used in swimming education, and ensures children are safe and ready for each step in the learning process. Each Kids Ride class consists of three 1-hour sessions. This allows kids to learn and practice the skills, as well as make friends with a cohesive group. Each class is $90 for Redmond residents, and $110 for non-Redmond residents. I will consult with each family about their child’s progress and recommend which class is appropriate for the child to take next. Kids Ride is divided into age ranges of 5-7 year olds, 8-10 year olds, and 11-13 year olds. For convenience, families with more than one child who want to enroll may enroll all their kids into one class, even if some of them are outside the suggested age range. All Kids Ride classes have a class size limit of 6 children. This is for each child’s safety, as well as to ensure each child can receive individual attention. Families need to provide a bike for their kids. The bike needs to be small enough so that when the child is sitting on the seat, they can rest their feet flat on the ground. Hand brakes are preferred, but not required. Bike helmets are required, and can be purchased from the instructor for $20 on the first day of class and are yours to keep. Or, you can bring your own and have me evaluate its condition and fit on your child’s head. |
